Stella Rita Bryan
Stella Rita Bryan passed away peacefully in her sleep at home November 10, 2019 at the age of 94 years. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Deborah Dilbeck and husband, Jim of Porter, OK; her grandson, Jared, and great-granddaughter, Haliey; granddaughter Julie Payne and great-grandsons, Cole and Bryce Phillips, and Trey Payne; also, numerous nieces and nephews.
Her daughter Deborah remembers, "Mom was born Sept. 9, 1925 in Hampton, Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband, James William Bryan and son, James Martin Bryan; her parents, Paul and Gertrude Westphal; and four brothers and two sisters. Mom met Dad on a blind date right after the war, and they both agreed it was love at first sight. They married in Virginia and moved to Muskogee, OK to start their life. Mom moved to Porter after we lost Dad. She had her own mother-in-law suite and enjoyed her apartment and her independence. Mom retired as secretary for the Muskogee City Treasurer, Carl Cole. She often said that was her favorite job and favorite boss. She taught swimming at Honor Heights Park pool for years. She played cards at the Kiwanis Center and danced at Hat Box Field and helped teach line dances. In her later years she loved to run errands with me, and she worked her daily crossword puzzle in the Phoenix. She will be missed daily by me and Jim. She was quick to laugh and fun to be with."
The funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Fort Gibson National Cemetery. Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner is in charge of arrangements.
