Angelyn Avery Jones was born to E. G. and Essie Jane Avery on August 19, 1925, in Miami, Oklahoma. Angelyn passed away Tuesday morning, April 3, 2018 in Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma at the age of 92 years.

Angelyn graduated from Northeastern State College and went on to study law at the University of Oklahoma and Northwestern University School of Law at Evanston, Illinois, where she graduated in 1948. She was one of only three women in her law school class.

While studying at Northwestern, she met Judson C. Jones, also a law student. They married and both practiced law in Chicago until 1953, when they moved to Wagoner, Oklahoma, and practiced law with her father, E.G. Avery.

In 1954, She became County Judge for Wagoner County and served in that office until 1969, when County Judges were redesignated as Associate District Judges. She served as an Associate District Judge until 1975, when she retired from the bench to practice law with her husband.

She was active in numerous community organizations, including the First United Methodist Church, the Friendship Sunday School Class, Study Club Unlimited, Arts and Crafts Literacy Club, and chapter EU of P.E.O. Sisterhood in Wagoner. She also served on the State Executive Board of P.E.O. Sisterhood, and served as State President for one year, 1993-1994. She was also a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution and was active in the Muskogee Chapter.

Angelyn is survived by her son, Carey.

Funeral services for Angelyn will be held at 1:00 PM, Friday, April 6, 2018 in the First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Gloria Denton officiating. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner under the direction of Hersman-Nichols Funeral Home, Wagoner.
