William "Bill"'s Story
William "Bill" Harvey Smith was born May 30, 1931 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to John Thomas and Luella (Batson) Smith and peacefully passed away Monday, June 12, 2017 in Tulsa, Oklahoma with his loving family by his side.
Bill grew up in Tulsa where he attended Union Schools. He honorably served our country in the United States Army, joining in June 1949 serving in Korea and Vietnam and retired as a Sergeant First Class in January 1972. In 1976 Bill started his second career with Lake Region Electric and retired in 1994. Bill's hobbies included fishing, gardening and watching Old Westerns on TV. He was an avid reader of Louis L'amoor novels. Bill was Post Commander of American Legion Post 15 in Fort Gibson for a period of time. Bill's greatest asset was the love he had for his family.
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, a son, Mark Smith and grandsons, Brandon Smith and Jarrod Miller.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Nancy of the home; son, Gary Smith and wife Frances of Muskogee, OK; daughter, Diane Woodard of Fort Gibson, OK; son Steve Walker and wife Tammy of Broken Arrow, OK; daughter, Sheryl Miller and husband Casto of Fort Gibson, OK; niece, Betty Jones and husband Jack of Tulsa, OK; niece, Karen Simmons and husband James of Vian, OK; nephew, Larry Smith of Vian, OK; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends.
Viewing will be 9:00 AM-7:00 PM Wednesday, June 14, 2017 with the family receiving friends 5:00 PM-7:00 PM at Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson.
A Celebration of Bill's life will be held 10:00 AM Thursday, June 15, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Fort Gibson with Pastor Dawn Richards officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at Citizens Cemetery with David Smith, Bryan Woodard, Mitchell Woodard, Ashley Walker, Jason Miller and Nathan Parker serving as casket bearers.
