Sibyl's Story

Sibyl Dickey, 97 year old Checotah resident, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2017 at her home in Checotah. She was born on Sunday, November 9, 1919 to Perry L. and Anna (McCutcheon) Hensley in Searcy, Arkansas. Sibyl grew up in Searcy, Arkansas where she received her education. On Wednesday, November 27, 1940, she married the love of her life, Wilson Dickey spending 55 years together. Sibyl taught school in Arkansas for 5 years. In 1946, they moved to Oklahoma. She worked with Wilson on the farm for 13 years and then moved to town. Sibyl lived in Okmulgee for a year and a half, then moved back to Checotah. In 1964, they adopted their son, Jimmy. She loved to work and even mowed her own yard. Since age 14, she was a member of the Church of Christ. Sibyl was a kind and generous person, always willing to help. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Sibyl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilson Dickey in 1995; and her son, Jimmy Dickey in 2016. She is lovingly survived by her grandson, Jim Dickey of Checotah and her nephew, Dr. Kent Hensley of Oklahoma City. Sibyl is also survived by her nieces, Ellen Coleman and Barbara York as well as other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
Viewing will be from 9AM-4PM on Tuesday, October 10, 2017. Services celebrating the life of Sybil will be held at 1PM on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Church of Christ with Mr. Curtis Hartshorn officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Ronnie Curtis, Danny Curtis, Herbert McCutcheon, Scott McCutcheon and Rick Dowdy will serve as Casket Bearers.
