Phillip's Story

Phillip Edwin Tanton passed from this Earth to Heaven on July 10, 2017 at home in Tulsa, OK. Born May 12, 1921 in Jefferson, OK to Ralph and Ola Tanton; graduated from Jefferson High School with All-State Athletic Honors; attended American Business College in Wichita, KS; enlisted in US Army Air Corps as an Air Cadet in 1942; WWII Honorably discharged as non-commission Staff Officer in 1946.
Served until 1959 with OK State Employment Security Agency in a wide variety of positions at local and state level; joined the United States Employment Service at National Office in Washington, DC; held various Director positions at both Regional and National levels, with final position as National Chief of Management and Technical Services for Uses until retirement in 1983. He attended OU, Am. Bus. College, Georgetown University, National Executive Ctr, USC, AMA, and Brookings Institute. He served as consultant to the Interstate Conference of Employment Security Agencies, served as representative of Department of Labor and the International Japanese American Commission for the JATP (Japanese Agriculture Training Program). Member of First United United Methodist Church in Chambersburg, PA. Lifetime member of many organizations including; Nile Temple of Shriners of North America at Seattle, WA; 32° Scottish Rite Lodge of Guthrie, OK; 177 & AM Masonic Lodge at Pond Creek, OK; American Legion Post No. 1, World's oldest at Tulsa; National Association of Retired Federal Employees; Charter Member of National WWII Memorial, Washington, DC.
Preceded in death by his loving wife Sarah Elizabeth of 48 years; parents, two sisters, Laverne and Marian, one son, Gary and survived by daughter Sondra Sue (Doug) Schumacher of Tulsa, OK, daughter-in-law Johnelle of Amelia Island, FL, sons John and Mark of Norman, OK; brother George of Huntsville, AL; sister Shirley of Enid, OK, four grandchildren, Shelly (Tom), Laurie, Brian (Tammy), Stacy and twelve great grandchildren. Many thanks to the staff at Interim Healthcare for partnering with Phillip, most recently Marjorie, Sherry, Cat and Director Ronda.
