Mary's Story

Mary Jane Flaherty Doerner, 89, of Muskogee Oklahoma, beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt and grandmother died Thursday after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Mary Jane was born July 19, 1927 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Robert Bernard and Cecelia Rose Flaherty. Mary Jane had one sister, Margaret Ann 'Peggy' Flaherty Emmett.
Mary Jane was a graduate of St. Patrick's High School in Terre Haute, IN with the class of 1945. Mary Jane started her nursing career in 1946 at St Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis, and graduated in 1948. She served on the nursing staff at St Anthony's Hospital in Terre Haute, IN for four years.
Mary Jane Flaherty married John 'Jack' William Doerner on October 24, 1953. They shared more than 63 years of life and marriage together. The Doerner's moved to Muskogee, OK in 1964 where she began working as a registered nurse at Muskogee General Hospital.
Mary Jane became employed in 1966 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center as a registered nurse. She was awarded Nurse of the Year of in 1983. Mary Jane also received the prestigious Heart and Hands award from the VA in 1985 for her compassionate caregiving. She retired from the VA in 1988 after 22 years of dedicated service has a registered nurse. After she retired from the VA she worked as a hospice nurse for seven years with The Hospice, the first hospice in Muskogee.
Her Catholic Christian faith was very important to her. She was a long-time member of both Sacred Heart & St. Joseph Catholic Church. She served on the Altar Society, a Eucharistic minister and visited members of the parish to deliver communion when they were ill or homebound. She loved to play bridge with her bridge club. Most of all she took great pride in raising her eight children and dearly loved her ten grandchildren.
Mary Jane was preceded in death by her Father and Mother, her only sister, Peggy Flaherty Emmett, a son, Martin David Doerner.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John 'Jack' William Doerner; her seven children, Tom Doerner (Laurie Doerner) of Broken Arrow, Kathy Hall (Jim Hall) of Muskogee, Billy Doerner (Kathleen Doerner) of Chiang Mai, Thailand, Michael Doerner (Reiko Doerner) of Shizuoka, Japan), Jim Doerner (Suzanne Doerner) of Greeley, Colorado, Brian Doerner and Tim Doerner, both of Muskogee; ten grandchildren, Ben Doerner and wife (Caitlyn), Sam Doerner, James Hall and wife (Michaela), Sarah Doerner, Rosemary Doerner, Shina Doerner, Tabitha Doerner, Mollie Doerner, Emily Doerner and Grace Doerner.
The family would like to express a very special "Thank you" to her longtime family friend, Joan Pierret, the staff Hometown Hospice and Eastgate Village Retirement Center; and her longtime care providers, Sandra Campos, Zoilia "Connie" Arteaga, and Ruth Ann Clark.

A celebration of Mary Jane's life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, January 28, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Mike Knipe and Father Rob Dye celebrant. A private family interment is planned at Fort Gibson National Cemetery.
