Text size

Josephine Riggs, lifelong resident of Wagoner, Oklahoma, passed this life on Saturday, February 11, 2017. She was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on June 2, 1929 to Mauricio and Mercead Rodriquez. At the age of 14 she started working as a waitress, then went to work at Modern Cleaners. Josephine attended Wagoner Public Schools and graduated in 1948. She married Robert Wayne Riggs on December 14, 1956, and he preceded her in death in March of 1984. Jo later attended the Muskogee Beauty School and received her Beautician License. Jo then went to work with her sister Virginia Gardenhire at the Silver Beauty Shop and worked until she retired in 1999. She was gifted with sewing, crocheting and cooking. Josephine then began the Grandparents program and reached out to be "Grandma Jo" at Ellington School in 2000. When she attended the football games, children saw her and would always come and speak with her. She was the longest living member of the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Wagoner. Jo enjoyed attending school sports, football and especially baseball. She and Virginia would attend any game, if a child asked them to come and watch them play. Around 1997 they were presented with an award for Fans Of Wagoner School Sports. In 2009 Josephine received a plaque at the All Sports Awards for the oldest and longest person attending the Wagoner Football games. In 2013 her health began to fail her and she could no longer attend. She was such a loving person, never met a stranger and always had her gentle and caring smile.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Paul, Andrew and Manual Rodriquez, and her sisters, Elsie Clardy, Virginia Gardenhire and Georgia Chavez.
She is survived by her sister in laws; Nelma Rodriquez-Sterling of Wagoner, and Sue Largue of OKC, OK, numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
