Johnnie's Story

Johnnie Merrill, longtime resident of Okay, Oklahoma, passed this life on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 in Ft. Gibson , Oklahoma at the age of 84. He was born to Earnest and Mildred Merrill in Coweta, Oklahoma on November 25, 1932. Johnnie was a 1951 graduate of the Okay High School and later furthered his education at Connors State College. He served in the U. S. Navy from 1952 until September of 1956 as a Gunner's Mate-3rd Class. Shortly after his military stint he married Eleanor "Sue" (Clark) in Muskogee on October 13, 1956. Johnnie managed Humpty Dumpty Grocery in Muskogee, for 25 years in the Lakeland Shopping Center. He also worked for Marvin's Grocery for a few years. Johnnie began a new journey as a Detention Officer for the Muskogee County Sheriff's Dept. for over 33 years until he retired. He was a member of the American Legion Post # 15 and also the VFW Post # 474, both of Muskogee. Johnnie enjoyed staying busy, being outdoors, hunting and fishing and also was a good at playing Domino's. But most of all his was a family man, a people person and loved his hometown community. He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Johnnie Merrill, Jr., brother Bobby Merrill, and sisters, June, Pauline, Mary and Gladys.
He is survived by his loving wife, Sue of Okay, son Rick Merrill and wife Connie, two daughters, Donna Merrill and Nancy Russell and her husband Bret, one sister, Carolyn Alexander and husband Bill, all of Okay, Oklahoma. Grandchildren, Tricia Black and husband Jake, Brandon Russell, Kristi West and husband Brad, Brent Russell and Ricky Merrill, Jr., twelve great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends.
Visitation will be on Thursday, from 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., at Shipman Funeral Home & Crematory in Wagoner, OK. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 26, 2017 at the LifePoint Church in Muskogee, with Pastor Rick Stevens. Interment will follow with honors at the Ft. Gibson National Cemetery
