John "Johnny" Szabina of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017, with his family at his side, at the age of 84 years, 6 months, and 10 days. He was born on October 12, 1932 in Kunhegyes Hungary to Imre Szabina and Julianna Pontos Szabina.
John came to the United States in 1956, along with 3 others, during the Hungarian Revolution. He found his way to Muskogee, Oklahoma where he was sponsored by the Catholic Church and made it his home. In 1956, he began his first job working in a cake shop and soon began a career at Advance Laundry, now known as Superior Linen, as a maintenance engineer. He applied for and gained US citizenship in 1962. John retired from Superior Linen in 2014 after 50+ years of service.
John considered himself very blessed when he married his best friend, Wanda Potter, on August 1, 1959 in Muskogee, OK. They shared more than 58 years of life and marriage together.
John will be remembered as a happy soul who always had an encouraging smile and could always be counted on to lend a helping hand to all. He loved nothing more than spending time with his family. His hobbies included bowling, playing golf, spending time in his yard, and traveling.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 sisters, Julianna, Guyla, Gizella, Ilonna, and; 2 brothers, Jutka and Mihlly.
John is survived by wife, Wanda; son, Steve Szabina and wife Marnie; grandsons, Gordon Szabina and Seth Szabina.
A memorial service honoring John's life will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. John Davis officiating.
