While teaching in the day time, she went back to school at night and received a Master of Science in Education in 1980. As she taught children, she realized that she loved teaching children to read. So, she went back to night school at Pittsburg and received a Doctorate Specialist in Education (Reading), in 1986. She focused on grade school children to teach them to read. She spent her workdays, traveling to all grade schools in Miami. Jean spent her evenings tutoring children who needed extra help in her home. Jean retired from Miami Public Schools after well over twenty-five years. After retirement, she continued teaching at Mount Olive Lutheran School for several years.
