They were members of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Miami.
Jean worked at several businesses in Miami, including, Miami Sewing factory, Commerce Sales, and in the Financial Aid office at NEO A&M College. It was while she was working at NEO, that she decided to go to college herself and become a teacher as she loved being around and teaching children. While teaching in the day time, she went back to school at night and received a Master of Science in Education in 1980. As she taught children, she realized that she loved teaching children to read. So, she went back to night school at Pittsburg and received a Doctorate Specialist in Education (Reading), in 1986. She focused on grade school children to teach them to read. She spent her workdays, traveling to all grade schools in Miami. Jean spent her evenings tutoring children who needed extra help in her home. Jean retired from Miami Public Schools after well over twenty-five years. After retirement, she continued teaching at Mount Olive Lutheran School for several years. She was also active in the March of Dimes and the Retired Teachers Association. She pursued her hobby of researching her ancestry at the Miami Public Library.
