Ina's Story

Ina Hargis, 83 year old, Checotah resident, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 24, 2017 in Muskogee. She was born on Sunday, March 12, 1933 in Elm Grove, OK to Claude (C.R.) and Lora (Lemley) Jennnings. Ina graduated from Checotah High School in 1950 as Valedictorian of her class. She met, fell in love and later married Al Hargis on Sunday, September 10, 1950 at First Baptist Church of Checotah and to this union, two children were born Glenda and Steve. Ina worked at Sharpe's Dept Store and People's National Bank before she resumed her education by attending Connors State College in Warner, OK. She graduated from there in 1977. Ina then went to work for Payne and Rice Clinic as a Medical Transcriptionist and retired in 1990 but then returned to work there in 2004. Ina was an excellent homemaker, loving wife and help mate to her husband. She was a devoted mother to her children and a friend to everyone. Ina was a member of the of Westside Free Will Baptist Church, but attended and was active in the Friendship Sunday School Class of First Baptist Church. In her spare time, she loved her flowers, reading, sunrises and sunsets. She also enjoyed mule and wagon trail rides with Al and watching Western movies, sitting in the yard and visiting with friends and neighbors. Ina was a woman of Integrity and always attentive to the needs of others. She accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior when she was 10 years old. Ina was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 53 years. She is lovingly survived by her daughter, Glenda Hogan and her husband Bill of Muskogee; her son, Steve Hargis of Checotah; her grandchildren, Angela (Hogan) Brown and her husband Nick, Billy Hogan, Jr. and his wife Jeanette and their children Ryan and Cameron; her great grandson, Colten Brown. Ina is also survived by one brother, Rogers Jennings of Checotah, many nieces, great nieces, nephews, great nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law as well as a host of friends.
Viewing will be held from 9AM-6PM on Wednesday, March 1, 2017 with family visitation from 4-6PM at Garrett Family Funeral Home, Checotah. Services will be held at 1PM on Thursday, March 2, 2017 at Westside Free Will Baptist Church of Checotah with Reverend Scott Reed officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Shawn Ward, Bill Duvall, Spud Duvall, Gary Hughart, Jerry Longcrier and Steve Hargis will serve as Casket Bearers. Dorothy Hall, Imogene Duvall, Sam Duvall, Jenny Duvall, Billie Bailey, Chester Bailey, Ernestine Lawson, Hershel Lemley, Cora Lemley, Helen Sweeney, Sammy Byrd, John Garrett and the Friendship Sunday School Class members will serve as Honorary Casket Bearers.
