George's Story

George Franklin Todd, a lifelong Checotah resident, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, March 26, 2017 at the age of 79. He was born on Saturday, July 3, 1937 in Checotah to Arch and Axielee (Dornan) Todd. Franklin grew up in Checotah where he received his education and graduated with the 1957 class of Checotah High School. After graduation, he attended Okmulgee Tech where he studied auto mechanics and obtained his Doctorate of Motors . On Monday, August 29, 1960, Franklin married the love of his life, Betty Gamblin in Eufaula. As a couple, they moved to Shidler where Franklin worked as a mechanic for the local dealership. Franklin enlisted in the Army National Guard and served faithfully for 6 years. They moved back to Checotah and opened Broadway Wheel Alignment before being bought out by his business partner. He went to work as a mechanic for the Ford garage in Muskogee. Later, he went to work at Acme Engineering building large fans. He owned and operated Todd's Napa Auto Parts store and retired in 1998. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting, weekends at the lake and spending time with his grandkids. Franklin will be remembered as a headstrong, hardworking man that was willing to help anyone. Franklin's family will remember him as a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and dedicated family man that was always there for his family. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers-in-law, Willard Gamblin, Earnest Gamblin, James Gamblin and Roger Douglas. Franklin is lovingly survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty of the home; children, Mike Todd, Angela Reasor and her husband Todd all of Checotah; 5 grandchildren, Ashley Hackler and her husband Matthew, Kevin Branscum, Zachary Todd, Adam Todd and Briana Todd all of Checotah; 3 sisters, Nora Ellen Gamblin, Yvonne Gamblin both of Muskogee and Cora Esther Douglas of Burlington, KS; one sister-in-law, Mary Spirlock and her husband Curtis of Checotah; and one brother-in-law, Billy Gamblin of Redbird, OK. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, other extended family and a lifetime of friends. As you honor the life Franklin, in lieu of flowers, memorials are to be made in his memory to the First Free Will Baptist Church 713 N. Broadway Checotah, OK 74426. Viewing for Franklin will be 11AM to 7PM on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 with his family greeting friends from 5PM to 7 PM at Garrett Family Funeral Home of Checotah. Family and friends will gather at 10:30 AM Wednesday, March 29, 2017 to celebrate the life of Franklin in the sanctuary of First Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Larry Montgomery, ministering. Committal prayers and Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Donald Luke, Claxton Todd, Ronnie Brinsfield, Clinton, Foster, Don Johnson and James Woods are serving as Casket Bearers.
