Dr. Robert's Story
Dr. Robert A. "Bob" Honea, 88, a lifetime resident of Muskogee, entered Heaven's gates, Saturday morning, February 11, 2017, with his family by his side. Born February 21, 1928, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Olas Otto and Retta (Morrison) Honea, he grew up and attended the public schools in Muskogee, graduating with the Class of 1945 from Central High School. He enlisted and served his country in the Oklahoma National Guard. He attended Northeastern State University and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, School of Medicine in 1957. He began his career in family practice in his hometown of Muskogee after medical school and later retiring as an anesthesiologist. He saw many advances in medicine in Muskogee including his early years at the Baptist Hospital and then moving on to the new Muskogee Regional Medical Center. Bob retired in 1998 after 42 years of service.
On March 22, 1991, Bob married his best friend, Betty Sue Davis, in Muskogee. Together they have celebrated more than 25 years of life and marriage together. Bob and Betty Sue are active members of First Baptist Church.
His hobbies and accomplishments included Past President of Northeastern County Medical Society, Past President of Toastmasters and giving complimentary physicals for Muskogee High School Athletics. Together, Bob and Betty enjoyed entertaining their friends in their home and participating in High Fever Follies, Senior Follies, Class Reunions, Senior Coed Class at First Baptist Church and Civitan Club. Bob especially enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball and being part of the Chicken Eaters.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Olas Otto Honea and Retta Honea Ford; his first wife, Joyce Ella Honea; his brother, Don Honea; and his sister, Barbara Keener.
Bob is survived by his wife, Betty Sue of the home; his children, Robbie Groom and husband Garry of Broken Arrow, OK, Leigh Ann Joyner and husband Jeff of Clermont, IA, Mark Honea of Tulsa, OK, Robert Honea and wife Kelly of Broken Arrow, OK, Kim Fields and husband Mark of Henryetta, OK, and Lisa Milligan and husband Dr. Tom Milligan of Chouteau, OK; his siblings, Dr. Tom Honea and wife Betty Jean of Muskogee, OK, Joyce Melson of Rogers, AR, Brenda Summers of Bella Vista, AR, and Rusty Honea and wife Gayle of Rogers, AR; 17 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Bob's family will receive friends, Tuesday, February 14, 2017, at Cornerstone Funeral Home from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Kelly B. Todd Cerebral Palsy Center, 1111 N. 36th Street, Muskogee, OK or Missions at First Baptist Church, 111 S. 7th Street, Muskogee, OK.
A celebration of Bob's life will be 10:00 am Wednesday, February 15, 2017, at First Baptist Church in Muskogee with Dr. Johnny Derouen officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Garry Groom Jr., Dalton Honea, Bryan Thigpen, Michael Joyner, Eric LaRue and Michael Fields. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum. Honorary pallbearers will be Phillip Henson, Tyler Henson and Nathan Kuykendall.
