Dorothy's Story

Text size

Dorothy Elaine Perry, 78, of Muskogee, Oklahoma passed away Monday, October 2, 2017 at Hillcrest Medical Center with her family by her side. She was born September 19, 1939 in Snyder, Oklahoma to Jim and Velma (Smith) Goodall. She spent most of her life living on a farm with her husband, Howard, north of Muskogee.
In her early years, Dorothy's family moved to Haskell, OK where she attended school and graduated in 1957. She was very active in 4-H with her family and enjoyed showing cattle. After her graduation from high school, Dorothy married John Howard Perry on June 22, 1957. She began classes at Oklahoma A & M that fall but left when Howard received his bachelor's degree in 1959, going to Toaoc, Colorado where he began a job as 4-H agent for the Ute Mountain Ute Indian tribe. Shortly after, they decided to return to Stillwater in part so that she could finish her studies and she received her B.S. in Early Childhood Education from Oklahoma State University in 1962. In 1963, they both returned west, this time to the Navajo Nation where she would work on the reservation as an elementary school teacher in Dennehotso and Kayenta, AZ until the death of Howard's mother in 1966 brought them back to Muskogee. Dorothy then began her career working for Arkhola Sand and Gravel in their Muskogee office until retiring after 33 years. She continued to participate in livestock shows after their return to Oklahoma with her husband and later with their son every spring and fall. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, a state director of the Make It With Wool sewing competition, and loved competing every week in league bowling for many years. Most important to her though, she was by her husband's side in the operation of their farm and other ventures until both fully retired in 2009. This let them spend their last years traveling the country together in their 5th wheel and enjoying time together. Her health had slowed her down in recent years, but even after her husband's passing, she continued to live independently until the end.
Dorothy loved her family, friends and her alma mater Oklahoma State University. But above all she enjoyed watching her grandkids raise and show their own livestock, traveling with them to exhibitions until her health failed unexpectedly. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, John Howard Perry.
Dorothy is survived by son, Brian and his wife Tammy Perry; and her grandchildren, John Tyler and Georgia Perry.
In lieu of flowers, Dorothy requested that donations be made to: St. Paul United Methodist Church 2130 W. Okmulgee Ave. Muskogee, OK 74401.
A memorial service honoring Dorothy's life will be 10:00 A.M., October 7, 2017 at Cornerstone Funeral Home in Muskogee.
