Coach Dale's Story

Coach Dale Miller, 74, of Muskogee, Oklahoma entered his Heavenly home on Thursday, May 4, 2017 with his family at his side. He was born on May 16, 1942 in Stone Bluff, Oklahoma to Harold B. Smith and Jessie M. Smith. Duke, as he was known, grew up in Haskell, Oklahoma where he attended school and graduated. He furthered his education at Northeastern State University where he obtained a Bachelor's degree.
Dale proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army for 6 years of active service and 26 years as a Reserve. He was very honored to have received Army Recruiter of the Year. He retired in 2002.
He married his best friend, Lisa Edgmon, on April 18, 1981 in Okmulgee, Oklahoma. They shared more than 36 years of life and marriage together.
Dale will always be remembered for his love of sports, especially football. He coached football for Haskell School, Morris, Hilldale, Muskogee, Tahlequah Sequoyah, and started the first football program at Chouteau. He also coached the All State football team in 1979 and the State Championship football team at Morris School in 1983. He served as a coach, mentor, and friend to many kids throughout his 37 years of coaching and teaching.
Dale was a member of the Oklahoma Coach Association, as well as a Bedouin Shriner and a Mason.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Kenneth Don "Buddy" Miller.
Dale is survived by his wife, Lisa, of the home; sons, Kenny Miller and wife Tamara of Henryetta, Dustin Miller of Muskogee; daughter, Michelle Darst and husband Danny of Haskell; sisters, Joyce Walker and husband Larry of Haskell, Jeannie Smith of Eufaula; granddaughters, Avery and Kinley Miller of Henryetta; grandson, James Darst of Haskell; along with other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
Funeral services honoring Dale's life will be 10AM, Monday, May 8, 2017 at New Hope Assembly of God Church with Rev. Monte Humphrey and Pastor John Overton officiating. Interment will follow at Haskell Cemetery with Eddie French, Bob Wells, Jack Schultz, Myles Thomas, Shane Stewart and Bill Wells serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Tom Clayton, Gary Drain and Larry Bookout.
