Sonny passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017, at the age of 90 years. He was born on June 2, 1926 in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, to Floyd Van and Anna Lee Taylor Benge. He lived and worked his entire life in the Fort Gibson area, except for the time he drove a truck for Lee Way in Oklahoma City. After he retired from trucking, he was the caretaker of the Citizens Cemetery in Fort Gibson for ten years, a job he truly enjoyed. He also served his country in WW II, spending time in Europe, Germany, and Japan.
On April 8, 1950, he married the love of his life Helen Schmidt. They shared almost 60 years together, before her death on December 9, 2009.
He is survived by his two sons, Ronald Dean of Fort Gibson and Timothy Ray and wife, Jana, also of Fort Gibson; grandsons Wesley and wife, Natasha, of Muskogee, Greg and wife, Kim, of Muskogee; granddaughters, Michelle Benge of Fort Gibson, Charlene Lavellie and husband, Joe, of Fort Gibson and Audrey Benge and Gary Kivitter of Muskogee; great-grandchildren, Emile and Hayden Lavellie, Chloe Benge and Robert Dean Benge; numerous nieces and nephews; sister, Joan Gladd of Fort Gibson; brother, Dewey Benge of Hulbert, OK.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Elnora Worley and Mae Bradley; and brother, Thomas Benge.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2017 in the Lescher Millsap Chapel in Fort Gibson, OK, with family visitation on Sunday, April 16, 2017, from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
