Rita Faye (Horn) Burnett, age 99, died Tuesday, November 21, 2017, at Muskogee, Oklahoma, following a brief illness. She was born August 25, 1918, at Wagoner, OK, the daughter of Anna Leah (Hanes) and Emery Lee Horn. After graduating from Wagoner High School, she attended Draughon's Business College in Muskogee and started her career as a legal secretary in 1937. After serving several law firms and the County Attorney's office in Muskogee, she began her 36 year career with the Veterans Administration Regional Office serving as legal secretary for four successive Chief Attorney's and later as Guardianship Estate Analyst. After retiring in 1980 she enjoyed "not waking up to an alarm clock', traveling, shopping and activities with friends.
Rita was a faithful, active member of Muskogee First United Methodist Church since 1937, an honorary member of the Church Council, a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. She served as secretary of the Administrative Board for several years; she worked in the Children's Department for 10 years; she was a member of the Chancel Choir for 40 years, and she was on many committees. She loved people and served in activities that reflected her care and concern for others - particularly older church members.
Rita was preceded in death by her parents, her special cousins, Seaborn Lee Reich and Janet (Reich) Grandstaff. She is survived by cousins William H. Hanes and wife Monika of Lawton, OK; Sheryl Lee (Reich) Arnold and her son Tyler Arnold of Calgary, Canada, William M. Hanes and wife Iris of Colorado Springs, CO; Henry P. Hanes and wife Beth of Ballground, GA; Teresa Sneed and husband Mark, Lawton, OK; Sheri L. Martin and husband David and their daughter Elizabeth; and her church family and friends.
Viewing will be from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday, November 27, 2017 at Foster-Petering Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, at Fosters' Ivory Chapel with Rev. Cindy Culver and Rev. Jack Kemper officiating. Pallbearers will be William H. Hanes, Henry Hanes, Mark Sneed, Tyler Arnold, Rudi Reichenberger, and Bob Manke. Interment will at 3:00 p.m. in Elmwood Cemetery in Wagoner, OK.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home.
