Maxine's Story

Monday, February 27, 2017 brought to a close 90 years of a life well lived for Maxine Zaleta as she entered into eternal life. She was born January 7, 1927 in Columbus, Kansas to Evans and Grace (Alburty) Coons. She graduated from Cherokee County Community High School in Columbus, Kansas in 1945. She went on to attend the School of Nursing at Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona where she graduated in 1950. She was attending Southern Nazarene University where she met the love of her life, Henry Zaleta. The two were married on December 19, 1956 in Springfield, MO. Maxine worked as a nurse for over 40 years. She served in many positions in the Nazarene Church throughout her life. She was a great example of showing the love of Christ whether as serving as a nurse, coaching Bible quizzers, children's church leader, or providing meals to those in need.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Wilma Gibson; and brother, Evans Coons Jr.
Maxine is survived by her husband of 60 years, Henry Zaleta; sisters, Louella Wilson and Mary Kosmata; son, David Zaleta; daughter, Teresa Birdwell; five grandchildren, Jamie, Melissa, Joshua, Rachel, and Grace.
Viewing will be Friday, 9am-9pm, with family present from 6-8pm at Mercer-Adams, Bethany, OK. Services will be Saturday, March 4, 2:00pm at Bethany 1st Church of the Nazarene with interment in Resurrection Cemetery. To share a memory or condolence, visit www.mercer-adams.com
