Mattie's Story

Mattie Lee Cantwell, 82 year old Muskogee resident, entered the portals of Heaven on Monday, May 1, 2017 in Muskogee. She was born on Friday, December 28, 1934 to Schuyler and Pearl (Jines) Scott in Checotah. As a young girl, she moved with her family, finally settling in Onapa. On Monday, May 26, 1952 she married Marvin Cantwell in Checotah becoming a wife and homemaker and in 1953 she finished her education graduating from Onapa High School. Marvin went off to serve during the Korean Conflict and Mattie lived with his parents, Mousie and Dora Cantwell. After his discharge from the service, they later moved to Muskogee where she spent her time as a mother, homemaker and babysitter. Mattie loved cooking, sewing Marvin's cowboy shirts, teaching Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She coached Timothy Girls Softball Team and she was a very good softball player herself, playing shortstop. She loved softball and basketball but was especially famous for her chocolate gravy. Mattie will be remembered as a gracious, caring, patient and loving person that never met a stranger and will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was saved at Onapa Baptist Church and was a member of Timothy Baptist Church in Muskogee since 1955. Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Cantwell on Friday, April 21, 2000 and her sister, Betty Biles. She is lovingly survived by her children, Mutt Cantwell of Muskogee, Beverly Wood and her husband Darrell of Muskogee, Terri Cantwell and his wife Lori of Flower Mound, TX; her grandchildren, Eric Cantwell, Christie Cantwell, Matt Wood and his wife Kristy, Josh Wood and his wife Christin, Jeremiah Pease, Cassidi Leach and her husband Donnie, Cailey Rogg and her husband Joshua, Caleb Cantwell, Caden Cantwell, Lindsay Cantwell and Cody Cantwell. Mattie is also survived by her great grandchildren, Blake, Heaven, Maebe, Aiden, Celeste, Chandler, Wyatt, Cayson, Cole, Clay, Case, Abbie,Taylor and her great great grandchild, Addison as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
Viewing will be from 9AM- 6PM on Thursday, May 4, 2017 with her family greeting friends from 4-6PM at Garrett Family Funeral Home. Services celebrating the life of Mattie will be held at 1:00 PM on Friday, May 5, 2017 at Timothy Baptist Church of Muskogee with Reverend Kelly Payne officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Eric Cantwell, Matt Wood, Josh Wood, Jeremiah Pease, Caleb Cantwell and Cody Cantwell will serve as Casket Bearers.
