Martha's Story

Martha Marie Tuteral, age 82, passed away on June 28, 2017. Active and healthy her whole life, she was struck with an aggressive cancer three months ago. She never wavered in her strong faith and belief in Christ and always said she had a better life than she could ever imagine.
Born July 1, 1934, in Wilson, Arkansas, Martha was the daughter of Rev. John Henry and Pauline (Peevey) Richardson. In 1951, she graduated from Vanndale High School, moved to Memphis, Tennessee, and attended Memphis School of Commerce. In 1952, at the age of 17, she was recruited by the FBI to work in Washington, D.C.
She met her husband, Marion, in 1953 while he was serving in the USMC and on May 8, 1954, they were married in the Marine Corps Chapel in San Diego, CA. In 1955, they moved to Kansas City where she worked for a law firm while her husband completed his pharmacy degree. In 1958, they moved to Muskogee, Oklahoma. They worked together from 1969 two 1996 as owners of Duberry Drug.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother John Richardson, sister Rose Matthes and sister Norma Davis. She is survived by her sister Ellen Hinkle and her brother Jim Richardson. She is also survived by her son David Tuteral and daughter-in-law Beckie Tuteral of Woodbridge, VA, and her daughter Sharon Chapman and son-in-law Dr. Robert Chapman of Fort Smith, AR, as well as her grandchildren, Laura and Michael Tuteral, Carolyn, Christina and Natalie Chapman.
Before retiring, she was active in several organizations, such as Soroptimist International of Muskogee, and Muskogee PEO, Chapter AO. Since retiring, she was active in Beta Sigma Phi, Omicron Eta Chapter and Keystone Study Club.
One of her passions was giving book reviews since 1975. She also loved playing bridge and dominoes with many friends, traveling, as well as line dancing, and walking with her beloved dog Katie.
She has been a very active volunteer at the Ark of Faith and at First United Methodist Church where she was a member since 1958. At her church she volunteered with the Helping Hands Ministry, taught the Philip's Study Sunday school class for 20 years and served as President of the Friendship Class as well as President of the UMW.

Visitation will be from 1:00-3:00 p.m., Sunday July 2, 2017 at Foster-Petering Funeral Home. Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Monday, July 3, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, Muskogee, OK. She will be laid to rest with her husband at Fort Gibson National Cemetery.
