Kennon Leon "Ken" Garrett, 88 year old Checotah resident, passed away peacefully, early Saturday morning in Tulsa. He was born in Stidham, Oklahoma on Saturday April 7, 1928 to E.E. and Ethel (Lawson) Garrett. Ken grew in Stidham where he accepted the Lord as his Savior and was saved as a young boy. He received his education, graduating with the class of 1946 from Stidham High School and was drafted into the United States Navy, serving faithfully from 1946-1948. After he received his honorable discharge, Ken moved back to Checotah and attended Connors State College in Warner. He enlisted in to the Navy Reserves serving for 21 years. While in the Navy was given the opportunity to see the world. He moved to California and worked for C.H. Sugar Factory for 6 years where he made sugar cubes. Ken was quite the entrepreneur moved backed to Checotah where he went into business with his brother Bill. Together they owned and operated several Conoco Gas stations, started Garrett Wrecker Service, and Garrett Brothers Pontiac/GMC/Buick in Eufaula. In the early 80's he and Bill joined his nephew, Mike and bought Checotah Chevy. Ken also owned and operated two restaurants in Missouri and a liquor store in Checotah for many years. Later he embarked on a new adventure and opened McIntosh County's first pawn shop. Ken loved to fly, play golf, fish and travel to Tunica and Las Vegas. He will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Bernie, Bill, J.D. and Jim. Ken is lovingly survived by his daughter Sheila Hopper and her husband Brian; 2 granddaughters, Holly Johnson & Julie Hopper; a brother, Dr. T.O. Garrett and his wife Dolores. Also surviving are 2 sisters-in-law, Loetta Garrett, Sue Garrett and numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are to be made in Ken's memory to the Mission Center of First Baptist Church 13307 E. 96th St. N. Owasso, OK 74055 Viewing for Ken will be 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Garrett Family Funeral Home of Checotah. Family and friends will gather to celebrate the life of Ken at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 16, 2017 in the Serenity Chapel of Garrett Family Funeral Home with Reverend Page Cole officiating. Committal prayers and Interment will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday March 16, 2017 in the Fort Gibson National Cemetery with Military Honors rendered by the United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard and The American Legion Post 15 of Muskogee.
