June's Story

June King, Checotah resident, passed away on Monday, January 8, 2018 in Muskogee at the age of 85. She was born on Friday, November 11, 1932 to Lawton and Dessie (Hicks) Jackson in Council Hill, OK. She was raised in Council Hill where she attended school, graduating from Council High School in 1950. On Saturday, August, 26, 1950, June married the love of her life, Ovid Junior King in Checotah, OK. They moved to Borger, TX in 1950 and Ozark, AL in November 1952. In 1956, she moved to Checotah and began a daycare in her home. June began working at White Stag in 1964 as a seamstress. In 1966, she opened and operated the Wanda & June's Drive-In in Checotah and in 1976, opened June's Chicken House, then later sold it in November 1988. She began baking cakes and baked 1000's of cakes in her lifetime. June loved working in the yard, singing and was a great artist. June was the first woman President of the Lion's Club, a Lion of the Year as well as a Citizen of the Year. She was President of the Chamber of Commerce, a member of F.L.E.A.S. and loved bowling. She was saved at the age of 12, baptized at 1st Christian Church of Boynton and attended First Baptist Church of Checotah. June was preceded in death by her parents; her 3 brothers, Mack Allen Jackson, Lawton Claude Jackson, Jr. and Thomas Monroe Jackson. She is lovingly survived by her husband of the home, Junior King; her sons, Richard King and his wife Susan of San Marcos, TX, Robert King and his wife Donna of Checotah, Ray King of Sapulpa; her daughters, Karen Hyatt of Oklahoma City and Kathy Cox and her husband Rick of Checotah; her 7 grandchildren and her 10 great grandchildren. June is also survived by her sister, Beverly "Boots" Scott of Waco, TX as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other extended family and a lifetime of friends.
Visitation will be from 4-6 PM at First Baptist Church of Checotah. Services celebrating the life of June will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Checotah with Reverend Steve Dennis officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery under the personal direction of John Garrett. Terry L. Duvall, Will R. Duvall, Kevin S. Burdick, Robert R. King, Preston L. King and Cody D. Cox will serve as Casket Bearers.
