Judy's Story

Text size

Judy Mae Curtis, 83, of Muskogee, OK, was born January 20, 1934 at Durant, OK, the daughter of Jake and Florence Lorene (Tubbs) DaVault and died on Sunday, September 10, 2017 in Muskogee, OK.
Judy was a great storyteller. The second of eleven children born Jake and Florence DaVault, who farmed in rural southern Oklahoma, she grew up understanding that food on the table depended on the hard work of all family members. Yet, as she would recount her early days, this stark truth was rarely the theme. You could hear the joy in her voice as she described childhood experiences, whether working in the cotton patch, or "mischiefing" with siblings and cousins, or getting caught in a "whooper", you knew she loved her family, her roots. These strong family roots profoundly affected her whole life.
Judy was something of a daddy's girl and so she managed to double date with her sister, Delpha in her middle teens. She had many a beau, but her heart finally settled on a Tennessee boy named John Curtis. She and John married, and in a brief time they were a family of six! In a few short years, God came in and changed the path of their lives entirely. Both John and Judy offered themselves in His service, and she was faithful in her role of pastor's wife for almost 60 years; but she wore many different hats. She was mother, grandmother, family genealogist, historian, gardener, and Sunday School teacher. She loved her family, her heritage, and her Savior.
Surviving family are her children, John Curtis Jr, of Sulfur Springs, TX, Stan Curtis of Okay, Steve Curtis of Crowder, OK, Linda "Susie" Little and Glen of Muskogee;
grandchildren, Heather Gardiner and Chip of Fort Worth, TX, Kristina Renshaw and David, of Greenville, TX, Jennifer Marriott and Bobby of Fort Worth, TX, Mariah Curtis of Kentucky, Beth Ward of Muskogee, Becky Curtis of McAlester, Gabrielle Little of Muskogee; siblings, Pat Morgan and J.D. of Mead, OK, Aileen Pratt of Durant, Ruth Ann "Polly" Atkinson and Denny of Roanoke, TX, Burr DaVault and Bobbie of Mead, OK, Jamie DaVault and Betty of Arlington, TX, Johnny DaVault and Sally of Durant, Mike DaVault and Katherine of Burleson, TX; numerous other friends and loved ones. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Delpha Townsend, Faye McLarry, Dorothy Dixon, Debbie Curtis, Bryan, and Andrea Little.
Services for Judy will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at the Oldham Memorial Baptist Church with Reverend Glen Little and Reverend Donnie Echols officiating. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Burial will be in Greenhill Cemetery under the direction of Lescher-Millsap Funeral Home of Muskogee.
