John Harrison Jr. was born March 2, 1927 to John and Emma Harrison in Poteau, OK and they made their home in Monroe, OK. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He married Ruth Cross in 1949. After receiving his B.S. in Vocational Agriculture, they moved to Ft. Gibson where he started the agriculture program at the high school. He taught agriculture for 20 years. John became the high school principal in 1969, and the superintendent of Fort Gibson Schools in 1978. He retired in 1992 and continued to raise cattle and pecans, as well as cantaloupes, watermelons, and other produce commercially. He was a dedicated member of Ft. Gibson First Baptist Church. In 2014, he moved to Norman to be close to family. God called him home on July 25, 2017.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Harrison, his parents, John and Emma Harrison, one grandson, John "Phillip" Hicks, one sister, Ann Morris, and two nephews, Tid Morris and Ken Harrison. Survivors include two daughters; Linda Harrison of Moore, and Carol Hicks and her husband Bill of Norman; two grandsons, Bill Hicks, Jr. and his wife Lori of Mustang, and Matt Hicks and his wife Rebecca of Norman; one granddaughter, Kelly Shank and her husband Andrew of Norman; six great grandsons, Bill Hicks III and Tommy Hicks of Mustang, Phillip's sons, Caleb and Josh Hicks of Shelbyville, Indiana, and Andrew and Michael Shank of Norman; one great granddaughter, Hope Shank of Norman; one brother, Robert Louis Harrison, and his wife Cordella of Blacksburg, Virginia; three nephews, Louis, Cliff, and Bruce Harrison of Virginia; and many other loving family members and precious friends.
A visitation will be held Monday, July 31, 2017 in the Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson, with family receiving friends from 5PM-7PM.
Services will be at noon, Tuesday, August 1, 2017 in the Fort Gibson First Baptist Church with Rev. Danny Gandara and Rev. Mike Collyer officiating. Committal prayers and interment will follow at the Fort Gibson National Cemetery.
