Ida's Story

Ida Claire Downs Napier, age 94, of Locust Grove, Virginia, died peacefully in the presence of her beloved granddaughter Michelle and husband John Kim, Thursday January 5, 2017, at their home where she lived. She was born September 19, 1922, in East Quogue, Long Island, New York to Ethel Daniels Downs and Ferdinand Jacobs Downs. Both parents died by the time she was 8 years old. She was brought up by relatives until she left home to marry a young sailor, Charles E. Napier from Muskogee, Oklahoma. They were married August 14, 1942, during WWII in New London, Connecticut, for 64 remarkable years. They were proud to be members of America's "Greatest Generation".
Ida was a very caring, loving mother and homemaker. She frequently single parented their four children during her husband's numerous naval deployments, moving over 12 times from New England to Hawaii and other military bases across the USA. After her children were grown she volunteered at Veterans hospitals in San Diego, California and Muskogee, Oklahoma. Also, she and her husband were active for many years in American Legion Post 15 in Muskogee.
Ida was predeceased by her loving husband Charles in 2006. She was also predeceased by two of her sons, Charles P. Napier and Carl R. Napier; sister, Ethel Benzinger; and her brothers, Fred Downs and Edward Downs. Survivors include her son, Eugene Napier and his wife Nancy, daughter, Grace Margaret Macedo and her husband Marvin; daughter-in law, Lou Napier; brother-in-law, Carl Napier of Muskogee, Oklahoma; and sister-in-law, Judith Nagorski of Cleveland, Ohio. She is also survived by 7 beautiful grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Ida will be held at 1:00 pm, Friday January 20, 2017 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
