Evelyn Sue

Events

With sadness, we announce the passing of Evelyn Sue Lewis "Susie Q" on May 2, 2019. She departed from this world peacefully and in the arms of her family. Born in Florence, Arizona on December 16, 1952, Evelyn was the only one of her mother's children not born at home, a fact she often complained was part of the reason she was always a skinny gal. She grew up along Little River in southeastern Oklahoma where she spent much of her childhood as a country girl. Her family lived off the land, raised their own vegetables and meat, and traveled during the harvest season to pick fruit and cotton to put back a little savings for winter.
As an adult, Evelyn's work life was varied and colorful. She assembled shopping carts and gloves, cleaned office buildings, sold automotive parts, and worked as a laundress. Later, she found her calling as a caregiver, first to adults with special needs, and then later as a CHHA (Certified Home Health Aide). For many years, Evelyn tended to her most vulnerable neighbors and she did so lovingly. She was deeply respected by her colleagues for her level of care and she was adored by her patients and their families, some of whom she remained in contact with until her last day.
Evelyn loved spending time outdoors. She especially enjoyed gardening and fishing, eagle watching in the winter, and riding horses. She was a voracious reader and a powerful storyteller. On her happiest days, she would be out on the porch with a strong cup of coffee, visiting with family and friends.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her partner and best friend, David Aguilar, and her father, Thomas Anderson Lewis. She is survived by her mother, Lucy Baker; her children, Ben Seabourn (Amy) and Mary Seabourn (Simon); her stepchildren, Carla Brust and Rusty Seabourn; her beloved grandchildren, Austin, Jamey, Graci, and Arlo; her siblings, Bill Lewis, Bobby Lewis, Mary Kimbrell, David Lewis, Jimmy Lewis, Tommy Barton, Mike Barton, Kenneth Barton, Carla Dandridge, and Vern Baker; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Evelyn Lewis was a remarkable woman who left a lasting impression. She was fierce and she was vibrant and she was authentic. She will be missed greatly and lives on through her stories and in the hearts of her loved ones.
A celebration of Evelyn's life will be held on Sunday, May 19, 2019, from 4:30 - 7:00p.m. at the Papilion in Honor Heights Park in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
