Charles Evans Hughes Jr., 76 of Okay, OK was born June 9, 1941 in Sapulpa OK to Charles Sr. and Bessie Mae (Billings) Hughes and peacefully passed away Friday, November 3, 2017 in Hot Springs, AR.
Charles grew up in Okay where he attended and graduated from Okay Public Schools. He was very active in baseball, basketball and the 4H. He continued his education at Northeastern State University where he received a master's degree in education. He taught one year at Rich Hill, MO schools before starting a teaching career at Okay Schools where he taught math for over 35 years. Quick witted with plenty of one liners some of his favorite quotes were "can't grab your butt with either hand", "can't walk and chew gum at the same time", "boy, you are just dumb, go play in the street". His favorite pastimes were quail hunting with his bird dogs, playing cards and dominos. Charles was a member of the Okay First Baptist church for many years. His greatest passion was his family and he was always willing to help another in a time of need.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Lola M. Hughes on December 31, 2014.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, David Hughes and wife Sherree of Hot Springs, AR and Timothy Hughes of Muskogee, OK; daughters, Stacey Smith and husband Brian of Okay, OK and Jennifer Hughes and grandson Kierian of Hot Springs, AR; grandchildren, Aaron, Audra, Lacy and husband David, Corey and wife Lauren, Heather and Courtney; great grandchildren, Kayla, Mackenzie, Tucker, Brennley, Kahlyn, David III and Jackson; brother, Miles Hughes of Wagoner, OK; sister, Norma Jo Smith and husband Everett of Okay, OK; a very special dog Paisly Ann; extended family and many friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Charles name to Okay Public Schools Scholarship Fund @ 8611 N 49th St E Okay, OK 74446.
A visitation will be held Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Clifford D Garrett Family Funeral Home in Fort Gibson with the family receiving friends 5PM-7PM.
Viewing will be held 10AM-10:45AM Friday at the Okay Public Schools Gymnasium.
A celebration of Charles' life will be 11:00AM Friday, November 10, 2017 in the Okay Schools Gymnasium with Rev Ken Krepps, Rev Ron Forrest and Rev Donnie Echols officiating.
Committal prayers and interment will follow in the Three Rivers Cemetery in Okay, OK with Jim Hancock, Gary Hopkins, Spencer Farris, Charlie McMahan, Jeff Hughes and Jordan Johnson serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers are Mark Downing, Lavoy Young, Ben McMahan, Joe Burns, Randall Cargill, Perry Green, Ed Lasater and Danny Epperson.
