Bonnie's Story

Text size

Bonnie Kilgore Dickson, 86, left this world Sunday, December 11, 2016 at Eastar Health System Muskogee. Born July 1, 1930 near Hugo, Bonnie grew up on a family farm in rural SE Oklahoma. In 1948, she graduated from Goodland Indian School and later that year, moved to Muskogee where she resided for nearly 70 years.
Bonnie was a remarkable woman with an unwavering sense of duty. She met challenges in life "head on". A pivotal event in her life was the heartbreaking loss of her mother in 1952. Being the eldest child, at the age of 22 she assumed responsibility for raising her younger brothers and sister, in addition to her own family. Her impact upon their lives is immeasurable.
On a professional level, Bonnie was a "trail blazer" with many accomplishments. She spent 30 years within the financial services sector starting in 1958 as a cashier and bookkeeper for Bankers Investment Company ("BIC"), a multi-state firm (eventually acquired by Bank of America). She worked through each department and was soon promoted to assistant manager and later branch manager, becoming the first woman within BIC and the Muskogee financial community to be entrusted with these responsibilities. In this capacity, Bonnie became well known within the area, helping many residents with their financial needs. She opened doors for many women and was recognized at the state level by the American Business Women Association and once nominated as national Woman of the Year.
Most people knew Bonnie as the well groomed polished professional business woman. They would be surprised to learn that where she really felt at home was living with her husband Dave, on "Twenty Acres", a small acreage southeast of Muskogee. She enjoyed gardening her flowers, working cattle and feeding/attracting wild birds. She was an accomplished horse woman which extended to accompanying Dave, a member of the Shriner Mounted Patrol, and owning/racing quarter horses. She and Dave were also very active within the Kiwanis, attending events all over the country. But, her passion and greatest joys were spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, to whom she showered with love.
Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, David J. Dickson, her mother Millie Kilgore and brother Jack Kilgore. She is survived by her son Gary McKenzie and wife Pam of Lake, Mary, FL and his sons, TJ and Casey; daughter Becky McKenzie Dooley of Peoria, AZ, and her daughters Kimberly Williams, Kristy Crouse and Shannon Dooley; her brother Tony Kilgore and wife Kaye of Muskogee and nieces Michelle Kilgore and Melanie Tuggle, and niece Kelly Kilgore. In addition, Bonnie was blessed by five great grandchildren: Max, Anabelle, Brian, Arleigh and Blair; and great nephews and great nieces.
Services will be held on Friday December 16, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Burial to follow in Greenhill Cemetery.
Funeral service arrangements are under the direction of Foster-Petering Funeral Home. Condolences to the family may be made at www.foster-petering.com.
