Barbara Lou Newell passed away Saturday, February 25, 2017, in Muskogee, Oklahoma at the age of 83 years. She was born in Muskogeeto Harry and Elizabeth Gibson. She was a graduate of the class of 1951 from Central High School. She left Muskogee and attended Randolph Macon College in Lynchburg, Virginia where she proudly became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955 and after graduation, moved to Dallas where she worked for Republic Bank of Texas for 2 years.
Muskogee was where her heart and her love was, as she came home to marry GregoryHalstead Newell on April 26, 1958. Over the course of the next 38 years, she raised three sons; cooking for their friends, clubs, band events and athletic contests. She also worked countless hours volunteering; donating her time and talents to their various causes. There was a sign that she jokingly had hanging in the house that said "Newell Boarding House." She never knew who of her son's friends would be there when she woke up, but they were always welcome and fed.
She had her own interests, as she was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church and served on their Altar Guild for many years and was also a member of Daughters of the King. She enjoyed her years as a member of P.E.O., Keystone Book Club, Garden Club, and as Board Member to the Five Civilized Tribe Museum. She was also the office manager for Newell-Malloy Engineering and Planning Company. She worked with her husband until they both retired in 1996. They spent the next 5years "tripping" around the country and gardening in their yard until his death in 2001. They were married for 43 years.
In her later years, she enjoyed her weekly bridge games and being with her many friends. She was an avid puzzle solver and could always be found with an ongoing puzzle at her card table in the living room. She loved watching her 6 grandchildren grow up and was always in the audience for plays, athletic contests and awardassemblies. She loved and enjoyed her family, friends and her faithful companion (dog) Nick. She had a full and abundant life and will be deeply missed by her family. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Elizabeth Gibson, her husband Gregory H. Newell and her sister, Elizabeth Gibson. Barbara is survived by her sons and their families: Dan, Kristy, Karlie, and Klaire Newell of Muskogee; Gib, Laura, Grant, Jake, and Katie Newell of Grapevine, Texas; Greg Newell; as well as Brad Newell, grandson, and Teresa Newell of Tulsa.
Memorial service is scheduled for March 4, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Grace Episcopal with Rev. Bob Wickizer officiating. Interment will precede in a private family burial. Funeral arrangements and services are under the direction of Bradley Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, a contribution may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
